Can you tax a vehicle without a logbook?

A missing V5C does not have to stop you taxing your vehicle. Here is how it works and what to expect.

The short answer

Yes, you do not always need the V5C logbook to hand to get your vehicle taxed. Our process starts from your registration, so a lost or delayed logbook does not have to hold everything up.

Why the logbook usually matters

Taxing directly through GOV.UK normally asks for a reference number, from your V5C logbook, a V11 reminder letter, or the green new-keeper slip. If you cannot find any of those, the usual online route stalls.

How we handle it

We set the road tax up as a new keeper, so the V5C is not the blocker. If you also need a replacement logbook, a V62 can be submitted alongside, and your tax stays active when DVLA marry the two up.

What to expect

Tax is usually completed within around 30 minutes of your order. It can then take up to 48 hours for the status to update on the GOV.UK vehicle check, the same as taxing directly with DVLA. Your tax is active from the moment we send your confirmation.
