Frequently asked questions

Help with vehicle tax, payments, logbooks and your order.

Taxing your vehicle

Can you tax my vehicle without a V5C logbook?

We can help you arrange vehicle tax without your V5C logbook. Enter your registration to get started, and we'll let you know which details are needed for your vehicle.

How long does it take?

We aim to process orders within 30 minutes during opening hours. Some applications may take longer if we need extra information. Please wait for your tax confirmation before treating the order as complete.

What information do I need?

Start with your vehicle registration, then follow the steps to provide the requested keeper, contact and payment details. Check everything carefully before submitting your order.

Can a motor trader use your service?

Yes. If you're arranging tax for a customer, provide the correct keeper details and make sure you have their permission. Contact our team if you need help with a trade order.

Payments & Direct Debit

Can I pay for 6 months, 12 months or monthly?

Choose from the options available for your vehicle during checkout, including 6 months, 12 months or monthly Direct Debit. You'll see the relevant costs before you pay.

What does your service fee cover?

Our fee covers arranging your vehicle tax and is separate from the vehicle tax itself. For monthly Direct Debit, you pay us for the setup service and DVLA collects the vehicle tax separately from your bank account. Your checkout shows what you're paying.

How does Direct Debit timing work?
  • Set up before the 16th: your first DVLA payment usually comes out around 14 days later.
  • Set up on or after the 16th: your first payment usually comes out at the start of the following month and may cover two months at once, the current month and the following month.
  • After that: you'll pay monthly as normal, usually on the first working day of the month.

These are estimated timings. Check the payment dates on your tax receipt and DVLA's payment schedule for your confirmed collection dates and amounts.

What if my Direct Debit cannot be set up?

If DVLA rejects the bank account supplied, we'll contact you to let you know and ask for an alternative account. If needed, we can also discuss paying for 6 or 12 months upfront. Please wait for your tax confirmation before treating the order as complete.

After you order

How will I know my vehicle is taxed?

We'll email you a completion confirmation with your tax receipt once the tax has been arranged. Keep this for your records. Your initial order acknowledgement or payment receipt alone does not confirm that the vehicle is taxed.

Why does GOV.UK still show my vehicle as untaxed?

The public tax checker can take up to 48 hours to update after an application is approved. If you've received your tax confirmation, keep the receipt. Contact us if the details look wrong or you're unsure whether your order is complete.

Can I drive as soon as I place my order?

Placing an order alone does not confirm that your vehicle is taxed. Wait for the completion confirmation and check the tax start date. You must also have the required insurance, MOT where applicable, and meet the other requirements for driving.

What if I entered the wrong details or haven't received confirmation?

Contact us straight away with your registration and order reference, if you have one. If putting it right means reversing the tax transaction, you need to speak to us before 5pm UK time on the day the vehicle was taxed — after that it is finalised with DVLA and cannot be reversed. If you tax the same vehicle with us again within 14 days you will not pay our service fee twice. If you're missing confirmation, contact us even after the cutoff, and speak to us before placing another order for the same vehicle.

Can I cancel my order or request a refund?

Contact us as soon as possible with your registration and order reference. What you paid is in two parts: the vehicle tax, which we pass to DVLA, and our service fee for placing the order.

To get the vehicle tax back you need to speak to us before 5pm UK time on the day the vehicle was taxed. After 5pm it is finalised with DVLA and we cannot recover it. Our service fee is not refunded, because the work it pays for has already been done — but if you tax the same vehicle with us again within 14 days, you will not pay that fee twice.

If you pay the vehicle tax by Direct Debit, DVLA has not taken the year's tax from us yet, so we refund what you paid us in full, less a £5 card-processing cost we cannot recover.

None of this applies if we have got something wrong. Where an order has not been fulfilled correctly we put it right at our cost, and nothing here limits your statutory rights. See our cancellation and refund terms.

Logbooks & other questions

Does taxing my vehicle also order a new logbook?

Only if you select the replacement logbook option during your order. We're accepting replacement V5C applications and can submit the request on your behalf. A tax-only order does not include a new logbook, and any extra cost is shown before you pay.

Can you help with an ex-Motability vehicle in the disabled tax class?

Yes. Submit your order through our website as normal. If the vehicle is in the disabled tax class, we'll automatically handle the change back to its correct standard tax class as part of your vehicle tax order. We'll contact you if any further information is needed.

Who are you?

TMV is an independent UK vehicle administration service operated by Motor Admin Services Limited. We charge a fee for arranging your vehicle tax on your behalf. You can also use DVLA's own services directly where appropriate.
